　　Deserves recognition as an interesting misunderstanding of the hallucination generation, 20 January 2007

　　"Wild in the Streets" comes from the same school of film making that spawned other attempts to connect to the counterculture such as "Skidoo" and "Candy". The difference between this and the aforementioned films is that "Wild in the Streets" is reasonably clever and well-made. It isn't sympathetic to the counterculture and will likely offend those with fond memories of the time. Surprisingly, it was a big hit when released and appealed to the youth whom it ridiculed so much. Unlike "The Trip" and "Psych-Out" (two other AIP films), its not an accurate representation of the movement at all. However it does work as social satire.
　　The direction by Barry Shear is good and makes innovative use of split screen photography. Plus, he keeps everything moving at a quick pace. In its funny moments, the film works well. In its attempts at drama, its helplessly dated and just as funny as the humorous moments. Christopher Jones underplays his role and Shelly Winters overacts. Hal Holbrook offers the best performance and Diane Varsi achieves the right note of "grooviness". The script by Robert Thom has its moments, especially the ending (easily the most ingenious part of the film). "Wild in the Streets" isn't perfect, but deserves recognition as an interesting misunderstanding of the hallucination generation. Those into this kind of kitsch will enjoy it the most. I'd rather watch "The Trip" or "Psych-Out" however. (6/10)

 国共合作的北伐战争后期的1927年，蒋中正为代表的国民党新军阀背叛国民革命的迹象日益明显。他在一次集会上发表“训话”，表明反共倾向，还让时任国民革命军总政治部中将副主任的郭沫若拿着扩音喇叭对他的每句话重复一遍，郭沫若很愕然。他对时任国民革命军上将总司令的老蒋的发言很不理解。 蒋中正在庐山召集党政军知名人士开会，孙夫人宋庆龄和廖夫人何香凝也应邀参加。会上，老蒋要解除苏俄特使鲍罗廷的职务，遭到宋庆龄和何香凝的反对，国民党左派领袖邓演达（中国农工民主党的创始人）也不赞成，而且还谢绝了老蒋要将邓演达升职的意见。郭沫若在化妆舞会上鄙视老蒋及其追随者，宣称：我是偶像的崇拜者，也是偶像的破坏者。 郭沫若耳闻目睹蒋中正、杨虎勾结反动势力，绞杀工农运动。郭老曾去总司令部向老蒋请示法办欺压工农的豪绅恶霸，竟遭到拒绝；后来杨虎竟然干涉郭老与部下支持工农、逮捕劣绅的行动,后来还杀害了工农领袖。郭沫若曾经想动员第七军军长、桂军首领李宗仁将军倒蒋，可是未成功。有几个细节值得注意，郭老在俩政治部的警卫跟随下去总司令部找老蒋惩办豪绅，进门时由于匆忙未能给门口敬礼的两位卫兵还礼，出门时因为气愤，又没敬礼。后来找李宗仁，开始也是由于心急没敬礼，但是出门时由于对李宗仁还怀有希望、对俩卫兵的敬礼还礼了。这是我多次对这几个细节观察思考后的看法。郭老忿然在1927年3月写下了《请看今日之蒋介石》，指出他已不是北伐军的总司令，而是一切反动势力的代表。 国民党军阀终于向人民举刀，郭沫若向周恩来表示：要跟着共产党走。老蒋在南京建立了代表帝国主义、官僚资本主义和封建势力利益的‘国民政府’。1927年8月，郭沫若加入南昌起义部队组建的第二方面军，在南下途中加入中国共产党。他宣称，女神的时代已经过去，要迎接新的曙光。

　　Stuart Gordon, considered a master of the horror genre thanks to classics like Re-Animator and Dagon, decides to do a different move in this strange trip to human morals.
　　
　　"King of the Ants" is about a regular guy, Sean Crawley(newcomer Chris McKenna), a man without any aspiration who just live in his apartment doing the necessary job to live to the next day. In one of his jobs he meets Duke(Gearge Wendt), who introduces Sean to his boss, Ray Matthews(played by Daniel Baldwin). Ray hires Sean as a spy, and orders him to follow Eric Gatlin(Roy Livingstone), an accountant who has been investigating Ray's company. Problems start when Ray, while drunk, orders Sean to kill Eric. And he does it. Things go wrong when Ray decides to make Sean disappear destroying his mind with violent punishment and humiliation.
　　
　　From the point where Sean kills Eric, we go in the same boat with him, as he goes through a downward spiral of human degradation, traveling from guilt, to confusion and finally to his rebirth, in a state where humanity, morals and values are not important anymore. Chris McKenna acting is very important because he manages to be likable even when he is part of gruesome acts, both as victim and/or criminal. He has that look of innocence that hides a dark side and he manages to carry the film.
　　
　　The support cast also includes Kari Wuhrer, as Eric's widow who also becomes a central part of Sean's trip to hell. She gives a fine performance, although it's obvious that Sean is the main character. He is the most developed of all and McKenna's performance is up to the challenge.
　　
　　The film has very disturbing images of violence, and while it may not be as graphic as "Kill Bill" for example, the strength of the violence is in the lack of humanity that the character manifest. He is more than an ant in this world. He is the king.
　　
　　Stuart Gordon has managed to create a film that, while maybe it's not one of his best efforts; it's very well done, has a VERY interesting story to tell, and manages to capture the attention every second of it.
