简介：联华影业公司1933年摄制。音乐家林寄梅为女儿小梅举行音乐会。小梅风姿绰约，引吭高歌，倾倒四座。寄梅为此感到高兴。而小梅的母亲慧英却别有一番心事。原来小梅的生父家瑚因早年参加革命，遭军阀追捕而逃亡南洋。慧英为生活所迫，带着尚在襁褓中的小梅嫁与林寄梅。小梅自小受到寄梅的熏陶，长大后成为资产阶级小姐。慧英既为小梅所取得的成就高兴，但也为她的前程担忧。慧英已与家瑚相遇。家瑚向她讲述了在南洋做矿工时备受折磨的苦楚。慧英提出愿与他恢复夫妻关系，家瑚没有同意。不久，寄梅擅自作主，将小梅嫁给南洋矿主的儿子黄书麟。小梅去南洋后生下一子，不久遭遗弃，以致心力交瘁，得了重病。慧英决定前去探望，但寄梅却置之不理。幸由家 瑚帮助筹集川资，她才得以成行。母女俩异地重逢，悲喜交集。当小梅知道家瑚就是她的生父后，毅然与黄书麟离了婚，带着孩子随母亲回到上海。慧英也与林寄梅脱离关系，并与家瑚恢复旧好。家瑚致力为创建托儿所筹集资金，遂为小梅组织游艺会。但在游艺会举行之日，小梅的孩子不幸死去。她抱着死去的孩子登台悲歌，全场无不泫然泪下。
