　　苏州评弹艺人郭月庭与妻子美玉以及孪生女儿白梅和红梅过着清贫、和睦的生活。不料祸从天降，恶霸丘龙欲强占美玉，搏斗中将美玉所绣“梅花巾”撕破。郭月庭盛怒之下，挥刀劈伤丘龙，怀揣一角梅花巾逃往海外。美玉携女儿随丈夫的师兄夏月清逃奔上海，又因战乱同月清与红梅失散。后美玉精神失常跳崖身亡。白梅被善良的农村绣花女芬妈收养，学会了刺绣；红梅则随夏月清以卖艺为生。两姐妹辗转流离，又相继回到故乡。白梅在绣庄杜经理家当绣娘时，与杜家少爷、青年画家石磊相爱。不料她为石磊精心绘绣的《梅竹图》却被杜妻窃为己有，送到国际博览会上得了金奖。白梅说出真情，反遭杜家监禁。与此同时，红梅于卖唱时遭恶霸丘龙调戏，夏月清与丘龙搏斗而惨遭毒手，红梅夺枪将丘龙打死。警察在追捕红梅时，误将从杜家逃出的白梅抓获。红梅则被杜家爪牙抓回杜家。杜妻为隐瞒《梅竹图》真情，用药将红梅的嗓子毒哑，并将她送入监牢。不料，红梅竟与白梅同关一室。芬妈闻讯前来探监，道出白梅身世，姐妹二人恍然大悟，挥泪相认。不久，苏州解放，两姐妹重获新生。红梅哑病被治愈，将家中遭遇编成评弹演唱。恰逢流落海外四十余年的郭月庭归国寻亲，来书场听书。父女三人意外重逢，各自取出珍藏的梅花残巾拼合一起，分离的骨肉终得团聚。
