故事开始于1976年的夏天，长念中子（于亚娜 饰）从日本远赴中国，寻找传说中的玉色蝴蝶。在中日友好协会的翻译望东（黄达亮 饰）的陪同之下，中子来到了昆虫研究所，在这里，中子见到了专门研究蝴蝶的秋桐教授。最终，中子并没有找到玉色蝴蝶，当她回到国内之后向母亲君代（王丹凤 饰）提及此事时，秋桐的名字勾起了君代的回忆。 原来秋桐本名慕容秋（项堃 饰），在赴日学习期间，他寄宿在了君代的家中。在朝夕相处之中，君代和慕容秋之间产生了真挚的感情，两人携手步入了婚姻的殿堂，并在不久之后拥有了爱情的结晶。日本侵华战争爆发了，慕容秋被迫离开妻子，带着两人的儿子回到了中国，从此音信全无。
