　　凶狠成性的黑社会金牌杀手黎勇（吴孟达 饰）在一次打斗中被人砍伤，随后被警方逮捕。在狱中他重新认识了自己，决定出狱后要重新做人。出狱后，他和妻子阿娴（罗冠兰 饰）开设茶餐厅开始新的生活。然而，黎勇一直担心子女误入歧途，自少便严厉教导他们，可女儿阿芳（朱茵 饰）耻于有个黑社会父亲，并在同学面前隐瞒家庭背景。儿子阿文（李家声 饰）则对父亲往事十分崇拜，自幼便好勇斗狠，常常闯祸，后来开罪了辉少（吴启华 饰），双方谈判破裂，混乱中阿文砍伤了辉少，其母亲和前辈张保出面摆酒向辉少道歉，而辉少不甘就此作罢，多番挑衅，终令阿文错手杀死了辉少的小弟。辉少埋伏在茶餐厅等候阿文回来，下手报仇，混乱中阿娴被砍伤入院。黎勇此时忍无可忍，单枪世马找辉少谈判，反被辉少追杀，阿文一家陷入重围……

　　大萧条时期，每个人都要守住一个梦想，以此来度过最黑暗的时光，生活失意的汽车制造商查尔斯•霍华德（杰夫•布里吉斯 Jeff Bridges 饰）也不例外。他买了一匹小个子赛马，名为“海饼干”，并笼络了一批同样有梦想的人，意图进入赛马圈。
