　　明末清初，河南遂平县有一富户，名为张忠实，此人爱财如命，嫌贫爱富，一心想高攀大富李家，于是他把大女儿凤姐许配给李家公子李天保。谁料李家遇到天灾人祸，几年后，李天保父母双亡，家业被焚。张忠实嫌李天保贫穷，有意赖婚，便谎称凤姐得暴病身亡，派人向李天保报丧。李天保闻此噩耗后，悲痛欲绝，立即登张府之门，为凤姐吊孝，张忠实措手不及，只得将为自己准备的棺木抬出，哄骗二女儿躺进去装死，以瞒骗李天保。谁知二女儿小莺妮不愿意助纣为虐，拒绝听从父亲的安排。张忠实只得许诺五十两银子求妹妹张爱莲相助，张爱莲亲自出马，好言相劝，将小莺妮哄骗进棺材，骗过了前来吊孝的李天保。事成之后，张爱莲满心欢喜地拿着银子回家，到家才发现哥哥拿秤砣顶银子给她，不由得怒火三丈，便将哥哥赖婚的真相偷偷告诉了李天保的舅舅赵义，并将凤姐领出来，带到公堂当堂作证。县官胡来本是一个贪官，原以为在张忠实那里可以大捞一笔，谁知张忠实一毛不拔，无利可图，满心喜欢成了一场空因而对张忠实又气又恨，加上张爱莲在一旁巧嘴利舌地挑唆，于是顺水推舟，故意将张凤姐断给了李天保，并趁热打铁，命他俩当场拜堂成亲，从而惩罚了昧心贪财的张忠实。这真是：聪明反被聪明误，弄巧成拙人财空，天保凤姐俩团圆，贪财忠实空欢喜。
