简介：1958年秋天，我人民解放军福建前线部队开始严惩盘踞在金门岛上的国民党军队。激战之中，敌人的一发炮弹突然落在了我军的炮兵阵地上，炸塌了弹药库，烈火蔓延向炮床。战士王志强为了抢救大炮，冲进火海，发射出最后一发炮弹，命中了敌人的运输舰。王志强负伤，被送进医院。诊断结果，他全身被烧伤的面积达80％，伤势异常严重。医院党委召开会议研究治疗方案，地委书记亲自布置抢救方案，许多互不相识的人都来自愿献血。一个中年妇女抢先来到血库，要求献血。原来，在一次空袭中，王志强用自己的身体掩护了她的女儿，使孩子得以幸免。王志强失血过多，昏迷不醒。杨军医、刘护士长和护士江玲守护在床边，精心护理他，终于使王志强度过了危险期。他醒过来的第一句话是“我要立刻到阵地上去”。换药对他来说，是一个严重的考验，王志强咬紧牙关，哼唱出了“我是一个兵”，用歌声打消了医务人员的顾虑。他的伤口感染了绿脓杆菌，需要植皮，需要噬菌体。结果，光是志愿献皮者就来了236人。三个工人同志的皮肤移植到了王志强的手上。两只手治好了，绿脓杆菌又感染了他的全身，杨军医用紫外线灯为他治疗，北京解放军总后勤部派飞机送来了噬菌体。王志强在广大人民群众的鼓舞下，以吴运铎、无脚飞将军为榜样，积极地锻炼，终于战胜了病魔，勇敢地站了起来，他恢复了健康，重新返回了前线。
