ブシロードのトレーディングカードゲーム「カードファイト!! ヴァンガード」を原作とするテレビアニメ・シリーズの第五期。第四期で一区切りを迎えた物語からは大半の登場人物が入れ替わり、主人公の新導クロノを中心とする新たな物語へと突入する。本作から梅本唯が新たに監督を務め、シリーズ構成は「ラストエグザイル -銀翼のファム-」「悪魔のリドル」の吉村清子にバトンタッチされた。キャラクターデザインは引き続き、とみながまりが担当している。 ある日、中学生の新導クロノは下駄箱に謎のカードの束と一枚の地図が置かれているのを発見する。それは“ヴァンガード”というカードゲームのものであり、“ギアクロニクル”と呼ばれる誰も見た事のない幻のカードだった。“ヴァンガード”の世界を知り、綺場シオンや安城トコハとの出会いを経て、クロノの運命は大きく動き始める。
