故事舞台设定在昭和30年代左右的日本，正值高度经济成长期，当时马戏团作为主要娱乐形式，已经融入了人们的日常生活，许多马戏团在日本各地巡回演出，并为了能够参加只有顶级马戏团才被允许参赛的世界级盛会，彼此之间不断竞争、磨炼技艺，在这样的时代背景下，由团长麻利亚率领的向日葵马戏团一边常年为资金短缺而苦恼，一边艰难地继续着巡回演出，就在这时，马戏天才少女鹤卷瑞佳因某些原因来到马戏团，故事也由此开始展开
